Overall, it was a good read, I think. Judy Blume did a wonderful job, describing the points of views of each character in the book (except Caitlin). I liked a lot of the characters and the storyline, but I think there is too much focus on sexual experimentations/relations throughout the book. I thought the middle dragged on a bit, I was anxious to get to the 'present day' scenerio. I liked the ending, even though it is sad; I liked how it was interesting and realistic for so many of the characters.

Good escape beach reading about how a poor girl from New Mexico came to be part of a wealthy family’s summers on Cape Cod. If nothing else, one realizes from the end that money doesn’t solve all problems.

I had high expectations as I began SUMMER SISTERS, but when I finished I was disappointed. While it was a quick, easy read I found the main setting (Martha's Vineyard) more interesting than the characters who seemed shallow and stereotypical to me. I just never bought the friendship between Caitlin and Vix. Author Judy Blume does a good job capturing the awkwardness of adolescence but overdoes it when it comes to their sexual experimentations. Also, for me much of the story was sad, portraying the human condition in a hopeless, not uplifting, way, with a particularly unsatisfying ending.

I read this book 15 years ago and it still holds up today. A sweet coming of age story that makes me long for the summer.

Unlikely friendships, dysfunctional families, growing up, self-discovery, sexual exploration ... just a few of the big themes explored by Judy Blume in this coming-of-age novel. A particularly apt book for summer reading - you'll feel the sand between your toes and smell the ocean breeze. Not only that, but you'll feel the tension alongside the characters as they navigate their teenage and early adult years.

I read this book in one night. Nobody writes about friendship and relationships like Judy Blume. I would consider this a good beach read, but with substance and depth. Highly recommend!

Summer Sisters follows the lives of Caitlyn and Victoria, two unlikely girls from different social backgrounds. Caitlin invites Victoria to stay the summer with her in Martha's Vineyard; shy Victoria can't imagine why someone as glamorous as Caitlin would want to be friend someone as boring as herself. The two of them form a complex friendship of love and rivalry that spans from the 1970s to the 1990s.

These girls share moments of soaring loyalty and heartbreaking betrayal, and I was stuck turning pages as fast as I could read, all the while wishing this story would never end. The settings are so real I could have plucked from my own childhood.
Although this book came out in 1998, I feel it is one of our hidden gems here at BPL.

I read this in like, two days. Love Judy Blume! I couldn't put it down, the story about these two girls was fascinating.

Fun book, especially for those of us who came of age in the 70s or 80s. Blume expertly weaves the music and the culture of the eras into the story. The relationship of the best friends is fascinating, and the story is good, too. I only was dissatisfied with the ending which kind of fell flat for me after such a big build up, so that it why it got 3 stars.

Completely surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I never would have read it on my own - it was recommended to me and I was completely enthralled by it. Wonderfully written with a captivating story and some edge-of-your-seat twists and turns.

Thought I'd read a Judy Blume book as an adult, but it did nothing for me.
