Loved this story and so did my kids. The movie adaptation is also wonderful though it cannot fit all the details into the story like the book does. A must read.

What a lovely book! I read about it in Gretchen Rubin's book recommendations. While there are parts that are dark, this is primarily a story of finding love and redemption. It will bring tears to your eyes, and smiles to your face. I read it in one sitting, and could not put it down. Both Will and Mr. Tom are wonderful characters who unfold over the course of the book. What a blessing to them both that they found each other! This book is not just for young people.

This is a tender and tough story about an abused child who is sent to live with strangers during WWII. It is also the story of an old man, angry and lonely, who must make a home for the boy.

There's a good reason this book is a classic. It's well-written, evocative, disturbing, moving, and enjoyable. The subject is handled with all the thoughtfulness, insight, and complexity one would look for in a good novel for adults, accessible to young readers but never condescending. There will be some points that younger readers may miss, but the story works whether they do or not - and if they do, it just means there will be more to find when they reread.

Make no mistake, there are points where this novel is very hard to read at an emotional level because it pulls no punches (so to speak - what a horribly appropriate metaphor) in depicting some terrible things. But the characters are rich and engaging and nuanced, and the story itself is gripping.
