I am glad I picked this book up. Going to try some of the other titles by this author. Loved the opening scene with Maud belting out the Battle Hymn while enduring a timeout in the orphanage lighthouse. With her spirited outlook on life, interesting things are bound to happen and a strong character is under construction.

A fantastic and original story about a spunky orphan, an unconventional adoptive family and a whole lot of secrets. Schlitz does a great job of developing complex characters- I loved Maud!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book. a fantastic story about a girl who only wants to be wanted. my only complaint is that i want more about the ending. what happens after she is taken home? does she find her brother?

My nine-year-old daughter and thirteen-year-old son both enjoyed this story. A cast of refreshingly imperfect characters, some ugly, others cruel, and children trying to find out who to trust. Scary and exciting, lots of sadness and bravery -- a great read.

Very well-written novel that would appeal to readers of the Lemony Snicket books. The historical information about how seances were faked was fascinating.
