A Farewell to Arms

I thought the story as told by Hemmingway was sad enough. This film version has an added twist to make it more of a tear jerker.

I never read the book so judging this movie solely on its own merits I have to rate it as very poor. Helen Hayes' ham-handed overacting vs. Gary Cooper's monotone underacting. The French Captain is the only good thing about this mess and even he turns out to be a dick around half way thru. This is a good example of how movies are sometimes called a "classic" merely because they are old.

This film, based on Hemingway’s great novel, tells the story of two non-combatants in WWI, who fall in love, but are separated by the war. Never in the film is there any evidence that the war is good for anybody. The film was Oscar nominated for best picture and won Oscars for best cinematography and best sound. This film was released a short time before the Hays Code would inflict great damage to the art of film making. The subject matter of this film, although totally benign in the 21st century, would have had to have many ridiculous cuts related to the beautiful love relationship.

I enjoyed this DVD. It is good for children to watch. Strong story. Well acted.

Other than his writing style, Hemmingway's stories never were that great ...

Our poor grandparents had to watch these kinds of movies?! no wonder their lives were so short...the whole movie you hear sound of blasting bombs as well as constant moving away from one's lover...damn war mongers!...and this female actress looks so much like a snapping turtle!
