It's just another day on the job for a band of badass combat zone rescue workers as they defy death and confront war's absurdities. The setting is 1995, somewhere in the Balkans. Over the course of 24 breathless hours, Mambru leads his team of humanitarians, including hard-bitten, wisecracking veteran B and new recruit Sophie, as they deal with a most unexpected crisis, layers of bureaucratic red tape, and the reappearance of Mambru's old flame.

Surprisingly not as depressing as I expected, considering the subject matter. A small group of aid workers travel across a war-torn landscape looking for a rope to remove a body from a well before it poisons the water. The specifics of the conflict are never given, because that is not the point--the point is the cruel absurdities of war, and as such, this could be any conflict, anywhere in the world. The different members of the group, from jaded veterans to idealistic newcomers and the long-suffering local interpreter, deal with events and setbacks in very different ways, often falling back on humor to make their day bearable. A cleverly understated, thought-provoking and compassionate look into how it feels to be a non-combatant outsider in the midst of a war zone, trying to make the best of a bad situation and do some good in the midst of hell.

I was skeptical about this one when I checked it out. Much to my surprise, it turned out to be a good movie. Lots of humor, which I wasn't expecting, and a basic plot not commonly used. I would recommend it to adults.

This semi-art-house piece deals with a group of aid workers in the war-torn Balkans trying to find a piece of rope so they can hoist a decaying dead body out of a well. In doing so they had to fight among themselves, avoid land mines, and deal with ridiculous UN bureaucracy. I say it is worth a watch.

Humanitarian aid workers for a fictional NGO tool around a war-torn Bosnia in Range Rovers while the ink dries on the Dayton Peace Accord. Benicio del Toro is good given how barren the script is. But the movie provides zero insight into the conflict -- what it was about, who the combatants were, why the United Nations was there. The whole thing plays like "spring break in the Balkans." Basically a dud.

Hesitated to watch this because of its grim topic, but found it really quite brilliant in a quiet, understated way. Compares to M.A.S.H. in alluding to the horrors of war in indirect ways, through its consequences and absurdities. Wonderful cast and absolutely believable characters and scenarios.

I just want to correct a previous comment - this film was NOT shot on location but filmed in Spain. The producers and the director are Spanish. This film was so politically correct that they never even mentioned the language in the country where the war was taking place, nor the names of the countries involved in the war. Though I did recognize the Serbo-Croation language.

Far from a perfect movie.....it was sooooo slooooooow...there was some humorous moments of jibber jabbing, and a nice side story, but all in all, it was a straight to video release that may or may not be enough to keep you interested up to the dismal ending.

A well written script and a very well acted film. Shot on location, which must not have been easy. Good amount of humor that succeeds in making the film worthwhile. Give it a try. You just might like "A Perfect Day"!

Balkan M.A.S.H meets U.N. Catch-22. Spoiler ALERT enough? Film begins and ends with the same contaminated water (common war crime) well, a bit surreal (for more surreal opening, see Argentine film Chinese Takeaway with Ricardo Darin, holy cow!); watching Benicio in his rare comic turn with a wicked twinkle in his eyes is great fun; the rest of the cast is no slouch either. Marlene Dietrich had her final wistful antiwar song to round out this "perfect" day.

Ride along with a group of rescue workers, as war weary as real soldiers, fighting the absurdity and brutality of religious warfare. They deal with problems of making a difference only to find themselves more detached from the world they try to "fix"
