The highest praise greeted the hardcover publication of this engrossing, brilliant book - THE definitive story of the Great War, the war that created the modern world, unleashing the terrors of mechanized warfare and mass death, and establishing the political fault lines that imperil European stability to this day.

Keegan takes us behind the scenes of the doomed diplomatic efforts to avert the catastrophe; he probes the haunting question of how a civilization at the height of its cultural achievement and prosperity could propel itself toward ruin with so little provocation; his panoramic narrative brings to life the nightmarish engagements whose names have become legend - Verdun, the Somme, Gallipoli - as with profound sympathy, he explores the minds of Joffe, Haig and Hindenburg, the famed generals who directed the cataclysm.

Finally got around to reading this book, and boy am I glad I did. Keegan is an excellent writer, with a sharp eye for detail. He can pack a lot of analysis and insight into a single sentence that is beautifully crafted.

If you're looking for a solid introduction to the First World War (and one that doesn't drag on for several volumes), this should be your go-to book.

My Dad recommended that I read this John Keegan book. It gave me a new perspective of this time in history, and how the lessons learned from this war seem to be pertinent in today's world climate of conflict. Keegan's writing style is pure military history.

For anyone that's read John Keegan's work before, it will come as no surprise that "The First World War" is a lucid and greatly readable experience. One of the top popular historians in publication today, Keegan's work on the war to end all wars is a fantastic text for those searching for an overview of the most important events, personalities, and battles between '14 - '18.
