Totally understand now why the series deviated so drastically from the books - there’s no way they could have filmed this. A truly depraved monster condemning his enemies to an unspeakable fate. And, no, I don’t mean Dexter.
The description of “squealing potatoes” could put one off potatoes permanently. Not recommended to read while eating. But do read it if you love Dexter.

After seeing the TV series based on this, which I loved (well, until the final season), I was unpleasantly surprised by this book. The writing is workmanlike at best, and this is one of the very few novels that are much worse than their screen adaptations.

The first novel was similar to the first season. The show deviates starkly to this second novel. Too bad that it did. There is an over the top killer to pursue as well as Dexter's attempts to mimic real Humans. A fair bit of humor to offset the horrific crimes. A fairly quick read that is worth it if you are interested.

Better than the first

This one was better than Darkly Dreaming Dexter (the first of the series).

The introspective prose grows on you after a while, although still fairly close to purple prose territory.

Oh how I love the character of Dexter despite his obvious homicidal tendencies, but I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone with a weak stomach. Only the humour kept me from putting the book down as it is quite disturbing and for lack of a better word, gross.

Dexter is such a wickedly sick character. I find him so unique to read because no one human thinks like him. I liked this outing because the majority of the episode is his attempts to act "normal", to act "human" and it gets him into almost as much trouble as being himself does. Really graphic and disgusting case he works on in this one!

Our intrepid hero...a couch potato? Perhaps the disguise has become too good. Or is our favorite serial killer the disguise? Dexter truly struggles with putting things right once again in his life by his ever constant managing of the ever pressing urges of The Dark Passenger.

This novel was fantastic and dark, yet it was also comedic in a astonishing way. I was hoping to read a dark and mysterious novel that would keep me on the edge of my seat, but instead I got something so much more :) I really enjoyed this novel, and am going to continue reading this authors novels.
