VERY GOOD 2001 BBC production of four episode version on Elizabeth Gaskell's excellent novel. It does explore a variety of period Brit social circumstances - rich and poor, plus.
I do wish it included subtitles - quickly spoken period flavor English can be a bit elusive for me.

I love this period drama. Molly was so likable and genuine to me. I very much detested that step mother and even her daughter. I think Molly's father could have done better. The step mother doted on her own daughter and treated her husbands daughter quite wretchedly most times. The two stepsisters looked to be so close, but the daughter of that woman was an attention seeking narcissist. I could not believe she could be so blind as to not see who Molly had eyes for and captured Mollys true love and then just toss him out to the wind the moment he left on his voyage. That woman really thought she was the greatest thing often leaving Molly in her shadow. I was glad she was put in her place at the end by the high society woman.

I really enjoyed the acting and the story held my attention.

Another wonderful BBC adaptation of an Elizabeth Gaskell novel; the characters, with the exception of the doctor and the Countess are a pretty wretched bunch, but it is fun watching them as they undoubtedly existed--and still exist, particularly in liberal enclaves.

Booooring! Couldn't bear to watch more than the first 20 or so minutes. The rich behaving boringly in the !800's in England. I detested the girl, the boy, and especially the father! Vacuous, vapid, moronic -- I need not go on. If you have a brain, don't watch this!

I read the book and watched the miniseries with one of my sisters. Both were really well done, although I liked the ending of the miniseries better!

Wow, great movie, a real gem ..... the Beeb and PBS pull it off again, the quality is so consistent on these Masterpiece Theatre type series that I search for them like a bloodhound ..... and never am disappointed....

I enjoyed Wives and Daughters but I feel that it didn't end. I had a set of three dvd's. Two were about the story and the third was about making the movie. Can someone tell me the ending? What I saw was Molly trying to arrange her step-sister's letters back and that was it.

My second go-round with this. Beautifully done. Love the characters, costumes, etc.

If you like period dramas, give this mini series a try! It follows the book quite closely, and is one of my favorites--excellent casting. Elizabeth Gaskell conveys people and life with such timelessness. If you like this, you may also enjoy Cranford and North & South (not about the US civil War)

Squire Hamley: “I’m not saying she (Miss Clare) was very silly, but one of us was very silly and it wasn’t me.”
