Hang on for the ride: with characteristic poetry and pluck, Barbara Kingsolver and her family sweep readers along on their journey away from the industrial-food pipeline to a rural life in which they vow to buy only food raised in their own neighborhood, grow it themselves, or learn to live without it. Their good-humored search yields surprising discoveries about turkey sex life and overly zealous zucchini plants, en route to a food culture that's better for the neighborhood and also better on the table.

Part memoir, part journalistic investigation, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle makes a passionate case for putting the kitchen back at the center of family life, and diversified farms at the center of the American diet.

I loved this book.

First...the recording. Authors are usually not voice actors so an audiobook read by the author is usually not as easy to listen to. But in this case, Kingsolver's sincerity comes through and more than makes up for her nasality and other quirks.

The format is terrific. In her Q&A at the end she explains how they intended the different voices to work, and it was quite successfully pulled off. The interweaving of heartwarming tale with scientific or economic facts gave the book more power.

As an author myself, I appreciate the discussion of craft at the end. Fascinating words by an expert in the craft.

Turkeys. I couldn't imagine a book making me like turkeys, much less cheer for and even shed a tear for them. Kingsolver is a powerful writer, though, who pulled this off masterfully.

I could not listen to this audio book because the female narrator's voice was so whiny, drippy sweet and annoying. Didn't make it half way through the first disc. The male narrator was just fine.

Excellent book! A must read for anyone concerned about the food we eat and the world we live in. Hope everyone reads it and learns more about how the choices we make in foods impacts everything around us. Highly entertaining, humorous and educational at the same time. Great author.

I love Barbara Kingsolver's books! To get to listen to her read her own work is such a treat. Especially this book which is totally autobiographical. And the information definitely gives you "food for thought" Definitely well worth reading and/or listening to
