Critically acclaimed and bestselling author Linwood Barclay brings terror closer than ever before in a stunning thriller in which murder strikes in the place we should feel safest of all....

In a quiet neighborhood, in the house next door, a family is brutally murdered for no apparent reason. You can't help thinking, It could have been us. And you start to wonder: What if we're next?

Promise Falls isn't the kind of community where families are shot to death in their own homes. But how well did Jim and Ellen Cutter really know their neighbors--or the darker secrets of their small town? They don't have to look further than their own marriage to know that things aren't always what they seem. Now the Cutters and their son, Derek, must face the unthinkable: that a murderer isn't just stalking too close to home...but is inside it already.

Good domestic thriller, with fairly predictable ending. It is an easy read, with good flow and believable characters. Impressed by how prolific the author is.

eh, just an okay book.
The trouble I had with the book was the language. For educated people and people who were made out to be decent people, their vulgarity was out of character. As well, what parent allows their son to use such vulgarity in front of them? Why do authors feel like in order to grab the reader's attention, they need to use profanity? It actually ruins it for me.
I also thought it a little out there that the mayor who'd been beaten and ridiculed by his own employee would ask that employee to stay in his employ.
It was well-written, minus the language, but it just didn't garner a high rating for me.

kind of predictable, but i like his books.
2 background characters (cop & lawyer) were in another book of his i read recently--(A Tap on the Window?),as well as the name of the town. Maybe he's going to develop them into a series.

The Langleys were murdered in their own home one summer night. They were leaving town but had an emergency so turned around and came back home. The son of the family who lived next door, Derek, was hiding in the Langleys house to hang out while they were away and saw the murders and the murderer. Before he knew it there was evidence pointing at him as the murderer. Very good suspense novel with lots of twists and turns.

Winner of the Ellis Award for mystery fiction in 2009, this thriller is a gem. Exciting, believable characters, a good plot, a good who-done-it and lots of humour.
