It's December 2004 and Sam and his parents are leaving frostbitten Ontario for a vacation in lush, sun-soaked Thailand. Sam's sister Beth is staying behind. She drives her family to the airport to bid them farewell, not knowing that what awaits them is a natural disaster of unimaginable proportions.

Over the next few days, Sam will find himself thrust into the very centre of a crisis he could never have anticipated, one that will test his instinct to survive.

I've read much, much better YA fiction than this. This has an incredibly slow start. It trades on its audience knowing the wave is coming, and the first several pages are bland, with no hook apart from the reader's knowledge of what's to come - no tension, no conflict, no drama, just a happy family on vacation and missing the person who couldn't join them. The part with the waves was well done, helped to take me there with the bizarreness of the ocean retreating so fast - and then the horror of the arrival of the first wave and then the second. The part with the daughter really didn't ring true at all for me. It's what you'd want to do, but wouldn't be able to for oh, so many reasons.

This is one of my favourite books by Eric Walters. He expressed the situation of a real life tragedy in amazing detail, especially in the voice of Beth when she doesn't know what will happen to her family. The only part I don't like is the ending; it's so sad! All in all, an amazing book!

Great book with a lot of suspense. Good cliff-hanger, but I wish we knew what happens to Beth and Sam, but I guess it represents how real people knew about their furture lives after the wave.

It's an amazing book! I love Eric Walters because of the fact that he writes about real issues in the world and hoe he brings them into nnotice. He's an amazing author and this is one of his best, I couldn't put this book down. All the twists and unexpected events kept you in suspense through out the whole book, esspecially because of the switching viewpoints.

a bit slow and boring at parts, but it was pretty good! I like how it was told from different sides.
