The Seven Wonders --- by Steven Saylor. The adventures of a young man and his teacher as they travel about the ancient world to see the seven wonders, this novel is not too difficult, not too demanding, engaging but not riveting. Not exactly an action novel --- no mounds of corpses or cities laid waste --- but none the less worth reading as pleasant entertainment. This couldn’t by any stretch be considered adolescent fiction, could it?

This is great whether you’re new to the Roma Sub Rosa series, or if (like me) you’re an old fan and have read them all. Either way, it’s a very entertaining look at how it all began. I’m uncertain if this is the first in a new series of prequels, or if it’s just a one shot deal.

Saylor gave very interesting information and excellent references about the 7 Wonders, but these short stories were “Dull and Slow Paced” compared to his previous books which I admire. In his author’s notes he says they were originally published as separate short stories for various magazines. In the last chapter and the author’s notes, Saylor returns to the accomplished author we all know and love,

Good series of short stories set in Ancient Rome. A young budding detetective goes on a tour of the Seven Wonders with his mentor, and at each solves a mystery. Good addition to the Gordianus the Finder series.
