"Room" meets "The Slap" in a bracing, highly entertaining novel about contemporary parenting and family life. It is narrated by a high-spirited, precocious six-year-old, whose voice is convincing, insightful, delightful, and very funny. The novel raises highly contentious issues about parenting and child discipline that make it a natural book club pick and conversation starter akin to "The Slap."

I really enjoyed the child narator. The idiosyncracies and tangents were charming, amusing and an interesting puzzle to both understand and understand if they were part of the story or just a wandering intellect. The word play was amusing. Because it is from the child's perspective you often don't know what is really happening, but I don't mind that ambiguity.

Great story, loved the voice of the 6-year old narrator!

The idea of the book is very interesting, and as a parent of young children, pretty easy to identify with but I found the writing in this book hard to follow. I get that it's supposed to be from a child's viewpoint, but at times, it could have benefitted from an omniscient narrator.

I found the 6-year-old story-teller very annoying. Trying to be authentic (I suppose) it was like the kid had ADD - one line of story mixed up with 5 lines of animal trivia. Either I got used to it or it got better as I read farther but the first half of the book was a struggle. Only the story line kept me going. Felt bad for the father as the social workers blew the whole incident out of proportion and had no idea how to interpret what the child was really saying.

While this was a good read, it did not quite live up to my expectations. I appreciated the child's perspective and can see how things derailed to the point they did, but I was expecting a bit more.
