The first major biography, by a celebrated journalist, of this iconic and controversial hockey legend. DiManno reveals a man of contradictions - gruff and crude, bullying and sentimental, and easily wounded. She shows, moreover, a man of hockey. The Burns who rode motorcycles, dressed like a cowboy, and sweet-talked the ladies was, says DiManno, a self-creation. His one indisputable, true talent was for coaching hockey. He was a pure coach.

The amazing story of one coach's ability to bring hope back to not one, but four different NHL clubs. To have restored the passion of three original six clubs (Montreal, Toronto, Boston) and then win the ultimate prize in New Jersey is a classic case of truth being more unlikely than fiction.

Burns courage in facing his untimely death with cancer is equally insipiring
