Love sci fi/Fantasy but this story was too slow to get going. I lost interest after reading the first few chapters and couldnt force myself to read anymore. The first 2 main characters in the story Frey and Crake are both unlikeable and boring, but I hung in until a more interesting character Jez came on board. However, by then I didnt really care what happened to any of them.

This proved a surprisingly fun read. It takes places in a steampunk world so there are airships and clockwork mechanisms and the society is pseudo Victorian era. The airship "Ketty Jay" is home to a band of misfits and dysfunctional people each running away from their past. The TV show "Firefly" and the Locke Lamora books by Scott Lynch seem to be definite influences. There is that whole Firefly feel of people from widely differing backgrounds forced together by circumstance having to survive together and that Locke Lamora sense of banter and living at the edges of the law, although these characters have a good deal less "expertise" then the characters in the Lamora books and instead get by via stubbornness and force of personality. It's a good fast paced adventure that's easy to get into and has an enjoyable cast of rogue characters who are well developed. Worthy light summer reading for sure. And there are 3 more books in the series so far if you like this one.

Fans of Firefly will have a lot of fun with this airship caper. Wooding does a great job building a fun and compelling world, and a motley cast of characters to learn to love. The first of a four book series, readers will find this book to be a broader introduction to a new world, with a lot of fast paced action and a healthy dose of character building. Highly recommended to fans of authors like Cherie Priest and Scott Lynch.

It's got a bunch of everything fun.. steampunk, action/adventure, sci-fi, witty humor, a bit or gore and a severely dysfunctional crew.. Highly recommend all the books in this series!

A good read. Some nice Steam Punk themes with lots of airships interspersed with guns, jet fighters & electricity without wasting time explaining the technology. Only downside is that a lot of the plot reads like an alternate setting for Firefly/ Serenity. That aside, I enjoyed it enough I am going to read the next Ketty Jay book.

Very interesting, highly recommended. Read it. Period.

Some minor plot holes and loose ends, but still a great read.

An enjoyable story. It builds nicely, although I never really felt as if the main characters were in any real danger. For the most part I was following the story to find out why the crew were together and if they could remain together. It also has an interesting technological and political background which I wanted to know more about.

Overall a worthwhile read.
