I loved this compelling survival tale. It will leave you terrified of an EMP attack.

This is a well--written book; it outlines the major threat to the U. S. that is real and imminent; HEMP is the basis of all that little bad-hair fatboy in North Korea is working towards. One nitpicking note: anyone with a military background should know the difference between clips, which are no longer used, and magazines.

Probably the most realistic post - apocalypse/end times book I have read. It's not giving much away to mention that the disaster is caused by an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) created by high - altitude nuclear blasts. Casualties are limited initially to "collateral damage" however as man's technologically based infrastructure is wiped out the long term effects are arguably more severe than a conventional nuclear war. A strike of this nature could conceivably be made by rogue nuclear powers of which several are arising today. This needs to be treated as the grave threat that it deserves.

Riveting and hard-to-put-down, it is also disturbing and thought-provoking, a reminder of how technology, while appearing to be our friend, is creating a vulnerable world full of vulnerable people.

Just finishing this up, and it is an amazing book, focused solely on the lives of those who lived or were caught in Black Mountain at the time of the EMP attack. It is scary to think just how fragile our society really is. Everything so specialized now, and so very few people with the skills to survive if one day the power just got turned off. Just about to put a Hold on the next book One Year After.

I remember being asked to chaperone my sister to a Widespread Panic concert in the mid 90's. As JB struck the first chord of Tall Boy I was forced to call a code red and set up a perimeter around my catatonic protege'. I panicked and rushed outside to find an ambulance but inadvertently stepped into a cartoon world full of pulsating, pastel trees, shrubbery and a river flowing pure gold. I literally melted my mind reaching for the secret too soon and unlike this author still know that it is "should have" and not "should of." I really should have written my own novel years ago and never should have been asked to chaperone anyone in the 90's.

Wow, scary!
I was disappointed by the typos. Also, someone felt it necessary to add their comments on many of the pages of the volume I had. I wonder why that person presumed I, and other readers, would be interested in his/her inane thoughts.

Reading the forward of this book was an eye opener for me. This topic of EMP (electromagnetic pulse) has been talked about in many circles of our government. This book brings the story to life as it takes place in a regular small town with regular people and regular lifestyles. Could you and your family survive if this actually happened? Riveting and realistic with suspense and grief all rolled in to one. Great read!

An end of civilization scenario with real world consequences. The author takes every fear a person has and puts it all into one book. A depressing story to think about and not a happy ending story. Prepare to be shocked and scared enough to go buy ammo.

Do you ever wonder what will happen if an EMP hits the US? this author did research w/the US govt and wrote a book about what a town will possibly go thru for a year after and EMP attack.

"Damn our enemies who did this to us, they knew us well. They knew human nature too well, and just how fragile civilization is, and how tough it is to defend it. Something we forgot."
