This novel seems like it wants to be three different stories. There's Lish, a mother struggling with severe post-partum depression. Then there's Della, an unhappily married writer. Lastly there is Roy, a widower who begrudgingly becomes the pastor at the famous St. Michael's Church in Charleston, SC. The resolution to the characters' problems seemed rushed and unearned. The references to the beautiful city of Charleston are the best part of this convoluted novel.
