Richard Kadrey does YA - and he does it with earnestness and sincerity. This is very different than his usual tone. Never fear, though - there's still plenty of attitude and swagger, a punk aesthetic, a kick-butt female protagonist, and the dark, fantastical underground vision he's so good at. It's quite wonderful.

Amazingly talented writer--HAD to read this book in 5 hrs straight and it would make a GREAT movie.

Strengths:
Kadrey did a pretty good job writing as a teenage girl. Zoe was believable and pretty likable. In fact, all of the characters came across well, as people with genuine faults, and they were all fairly interesting. From what I understand of Kadrey, Sandman Slim is a fantastic character, so obviously Kadrey excels at creating the people in his world.
Another strength was the general tone of the book. It's very creepy. Not scary--I don't so scary at all--but creepy and unsettling. Zoe's grief is palpable and much of the imagery used helps amp up the bleak tone.

Weaknesses: World building. I really really felt it was lacking in this story. There was a lot of information dumping with very little explanation of WHY some of these things happened. WHY did Hecate start off benevolent and then decide to seal off Calumet (Iphigene)? WHY are people missing limbs and replacing them with random pipes and furniture? Valentine references that it has to do with giving a sacrifice, but what crime did he commit? Why is he missing limbs but Zoe's dad is just getting slowly vampired to death? WHY is Valentine so against telling his father who he is? What point is served by keeping this a secret?

Overall, I did enjoy this book, and I think the right teen would eat it up. My biggest gripe was with the many many unexplained/unanswered questions.
