Ada Wentworth, a young Bostonian, journeys to Hickory Ridge, Tennessee, in the years following the Civil War. Alone and nearly penniless following her father's death and a broken engagement, Ada accepts a position as a lady's companion to the elderly Lillian Willis, a pillar of the community and aunt to the local lumber mill owner, Wyatt Caldwell.

Using the millinery skills handed down from her mother, Ada hopes to earn enough money to establish her own hat shop back east. But then she meets Wyatt Caldwell, Lillian's Texas-born nephew, and suddenly her plan seems far less simple. As Ada becomes a part of life in Hickory Ridge - joining the church quilting circle and helping a beautiful little girl at the orphanage - she finds her feelings for Wyatt growing ever more serious. But Wyatt has plans of his own - plans that will take him far from Hickory Ridge. Can she trust God with her future and Wyatt with her heart?
