The parallel with Lolita is fascinating: Carol and Therese driving west with the detective in pursuit is reminiscent of Humbert and Lolita with Quilty in pursuit. Highsmith gives you tight, well plotted stories that you can fall into gratefully.

I picked up this book in the section called "mystery". Come on guys, put it in another section, please! Maybe just " novels" or something.

I could relate to the insecurity Therese expressed throughout the book and her complete adulation she experienced towards Carol. I am amazed at how authentic the characters were and how accurate Patricia Highsmith's portrayal of them was. Over all this was a really good read.

The movie was Carol.

I thought this was supposed to be the least sad classic lesbian novel, and maybe it is, but it's still pretty sad. Even though neither of them dies.

Not only is this book set in the 50's, it was written in the 50's. I found it very interesting and was quite pleased at the ending. I have not seen the movie yet.

I actually preferred the book than the movie. I felt the movie went rather slow, and the characters were too disconnected from one another while in the book, they come off extremely connected, close, and lustful with one another. I'm glad I read the book waaaaaaay before I saw the movie. I would totally recommend this book.

At first I found the story kind of interesting then in the middle I totally lost interest. Now I wonder if the movie will be the same or if I will be interested enough to see the movie?

I'm not a fan of Highsmith so had no great expectations for this even with the Haynes movies coming out soon.

But I had a great time, it's definitely a 2nd novel but I ended up with a tear in my eye and a smile on my face.

Great news its finally going to be made into a movie! I always thought it would make a fantastic one; its such a cinematic story. Hope they do the book justice.
