I would not read this book to a little kid -- or to a group of kids -- unless I was prepared to help the kids sort out Sheila's serious issues. Sheila is NOT a strong, confident, brave main character. The book makes clear that Sheila has real developmental problems. But by making no real effort to help her deal with her fear/ avoidance problem, the book leaves child readers with no guidance. I do not think Sheila is a kid with standard adjustment issues. She's loaded with phobias, and practices constant avoidance and denial. She does not face her fears, but schemes/lies to avoid feared necessary learning, then claims to already know the skills. She's also way too concerned about what others think of her. She NEEDS to be Sheila the great. How different this book is from 'El Deafo!'
