Cook, as always, can create a tale so meandering but so utterly captivating, he will have you booked in the first chapter. And this tightly wound novel is like a jack in the box, it slowly cranks up until the explosive ending. There are little hints along the way, but the reader is led down a path that is so obscured by "mackerel in the moonlight that shines and stinks" you never really know what is coming.
