John Henry is a tale that has been told for many of years. Julius Lester decided to turn this tale into a picture book. I would recommend this picture book to both teachers and parents. This book is a suitable way to introduce slavery into a way for young children to understand it. It also has an underlying moral that hard work pays off and it begins while you are young. There are not too many words and the words are not too large. The words are meant to enhance the child's mind and to help them think. I would also recommend this book because the illustrations are phenomenal. These illustrations tell as much of the story as the words do, they are absolutely remarkable. The words and the illustrations tie in with each other.
