Sarah McCoy has written a prequel to the Anne of Green Gable series that focuses on Marilla and her immediate family. Written in the style and vernacular of the Anne books, the author focuses on two time periods -- 1837 to 1839 (the Canadian Rebellion) and 1860 (when the United States embarks on Civil War). Marilla's ties to place and family leave her in a quandry when John Blythe comes courting. This book explores her dilemma, her final decision, and the consequences that follow for twenty years. The book flows quickly as I read most of it on a cold, snowy Sunday afternoon.
